Winter Gyeoul Kim works with abstract painting and drawing to trace sensations and memories that drift beyond the limits of language.
Some memories drift without a name. Those memories are so delicate, and flexible that they effortlessly navigate through the loose gaps in the language system composed of socially laden symbols. Winter Gyeoul Kim carefully captures these small fragments of consciousness in dots, lines, planes, and colors, revealing them in the form of abstract painting.
Having traversed diverse cultural and linguistic worlds, the artist imagines a language of instinct transcending the concept of language merely as a means of communication tool. The delicate layers and brushstrokes intersect and overlay each other, creating dynamics and movement reminiscent of music, bringing a sense of eager curiosity and unexpected joy. And, much like poetry, these visualized sensations can evoke whole new imagery in the minds of those who encounter them. Winter Kim’s paintings, dreaming of liberation from the boundaries of normative interactions, are slowly heading toward a quieter world.
Winter Gyeoul Kim graduated with a B.F.A. in Fine Arts from the School of Visual Arts(New York, USA), and received her M.F.A. in the Department of Fine Arts at the Korean National University of Arts. In 2018, she held her first solo exhibition «Hertz» at Weekend, followed by «As if Singing at Your Own Pace»(2022, PS Sarubia, Seoul) and «S, M, L, XL»(2024, SPACE SO, Seoul). She has participated in several group exhibitions including «Memory Beneath the Ego, Fantasy Above The Ego»(2023, Seoul National University Museum of Art, Seoul), «Only Indelible Good Left»(2023, SPACE SO, Seoul), «Abstract and Landscape»(2022, Kyobo Art Space, Seoul), and «I, Etcetera»(2020, Hite Collection, Seoul). She has participated in DOOSAN Gallery International Residency - ISCP(2024, New York) and The 14th Resident Artists programme at Seoul Art Space Geumcheon(2023, Seoul).
